We visited Campgaw Resort over Martin Luther King Day and had a mixed experience as a family with two young kids (ages 3 and 5) who are just learning how to ski. The resort is actually quite well suited for beginners. There are several slopes with very gentle inclines—perfect for children and first-timers. Our kids felt safe and confident on the Magic Carpet area, where they could practice and easily ride back up. This setup worked really well for both our three- and five-year-old. The small chairlift to the upper beginner section also offered a bit more excitement while still being manageable for little skiers. There are a few slightly more challenging runs—from the top of the larger lift you can either take a relatively short but steep descent or go down narrower trails through the trees with a similar gradient. It adds a bit of variety, though the resort is clearly geared toward novice skiers. Unfortunately, Campgaw has converted part of the terrain into a tubing area, which means some former ski slopes now sit unused—covered in snow but not skiable. It feels like wasted space and further limits the experience, especially for those looking for more than just beginner-level terrain. Our biggest frustration was the resort’s operations on a busy day. The queuing system is inefficient. Even though we had purchased lift tickets online, we still had to stand in the same long line as those buying tickets and renting gear on-site. It made for a slow and frustrating start. And once we were finally on the slopes, the two-person chairlift to the beginner area quickly became a major bottleneck, with 30–40 minute wait times for a 1–2 minute run. It felt poorly managed. The webcams will show mostly empty slopes—but that’s only because everyone was stuck in line. Bottom line: Campgaw can be a solid choice for families with very young or first-time skiers—but only if you go on a quiet day. On holidays and weekends, the resort is simply too small and under-equipped to handle the crowds. If you’re planning a visit, arrive early, bring your own gear, and avoid peak days if you can.
Great for families and beginners - on a quiet day. Good incline for incline for small ones.
Long lines at the lifts. Lift capacity much to low on busy days. Nothing for experience skiers

Took the kids there twice this year for lessons and they have had a great time. Conditions each time have been great and the staff is top notch. Buy everything online and show up and show them your code. Everyone is great from check in, to food, to rentals and to lessons. Great place to learn
Great for beginners and Lessons
can get crowded on weekends

This mountain of a ski area has got to be one of the scariest places I have been. The extreme terrain was not for the weak and it bested me many times. Only come here if you're looking for a challenge and do not bring your kids here

Went Feb 19th, 2023 being beginner and closest to me with only an hour drive. Magic Carpet was running but plenty of space open, two lifts (1 going straight to top for "expert level" skiing, the other drops off at beginner part of mountain and proceeds to "expert" level). Perfect for my level of skiing however the lift line management could be better, but was tolerable and not long. Staff was friendly and was somewhat quick to register and get my skis. Cost ~100-120 for full day pass and rentals, which if I drive another 40 minutes I could have gone to mountain creek for the same price. Will definitely come back due to the closeness in getting skiing versus going to indoor options Big Snow.
Great mountain for family, beginners, closest to NYC, friendly staff
Food quality near closing, keeping other trails open

We have been coming to Campgaw for the past 4 years and this will be our last. The staff they have working were absolutely rude! Called my son an idiot. Hey idiot are you going to put the tube back! Threatened,... don’t even try and walk towards me, you’ll see what happens. Yelling like Sargents... move, move, move like if they were moving cattle. We took 5 kids and all came off saying how rude and mean they were! They all said they don’t ever want to go back there. When I told the man in charge, not sure if was an owner, he was almost laughing, didn’t really give the impression that it was concerning to him.
Rude employees!

Two stars because they do have a slope and some staff members are nice. The place is geared towards getting as much money as possible out of you. Outdated equipment, lifts that take forever, ridiculous policies like you can be on a slope only in ski boots even if you're accompanying a little child, talking with staff is like talking to an automated bank teller. If you are able to ignore all that and have deep pockets then you will have fun.
One good slope
Policies, price, lifts

This mountain is absolutely perfect for beginners. It’s also great to get a few runs in after school. We purchased a pack of lessons for our son. His instructor Andrew has taught him so much in just 3 lessons. We will be back every week & for years to come. Anyone who wrote a negative review probably didn’t purchase lessons. I highly recommend renting your equipment else where for the season.
Amazing attentive staff!

This is the perfect spot to teach young kids to ski, provided you follow one fairly simple rule: Make sure you are skiing with them. We have had a terrific time her with my 3 and 5 year old riding the magic carpet and then graduating up to the chair lift. I was apprehensive about going here after seeing all of the negative reviews, but it was just too nearby to resist trying. Virtually all of the negative comments have to do with people who didn't bring their ski stuff or pay for a lift ticket expecting to be on the slopes with their kid teaching them to ski. That strategy will fail miserably, as they keep the people without equipment who walk up behind a fence.

If you are looking to teach your kids how to ski, you should avoid this place. I bought a lift ticket and rentals for my daughter who was learning to ski. I was not riding myself because I needed to be able to catch my kid and help her try to learn. we did not even go up on any lift, just stayed at the base of the mountain, when I was approached by multiple staff and management telling me I need to have a lift ticket and ski equipment to be on the premises. I tried to explain that I wasn't riding, nor would I be able to catch my daughter with my skis on. They didn't budge and continued to nag me with their idiotic policies. We ended up getting a refund and going to Mountain Creek, which was much more family friendly and accommodating. Don't waste your time with this place and just goto Mountain Creek.
Rentals staff is very friendly and helpful.
Anti-family friendly policies, more of a hill rather than a mountain.
